Signs Your Water Heater Is In Need Of Repairs
You use hot water every day of your life, but what do you do when suddenly it’s gone? When your water heater breaks down, it can make your home unlivable until its been repaired. Don’t wait for your water heater to break down in your time of need. Watch for these signs that show your heater will soon be in need of repair.
If there is water leaking from the tank, or puddling on the floor at the base of the tank, you need to have it repaired immediately. A leaking tank is a danger to your entire home. An empty heater can overheat, causing a risk of fire. The standing water itself can damage floors and nearby walls.
If the water just won’t get hot no matter how high you set the thermostat, you likely need to have the element replaced. A broken or burned out element still uses electricity but will not heat, costing you money and giving you nothing in return.
If the hot water comes out rusty or dark but the cold water is clear you have a dirty tank. Get your tank flushed right away if you see orange or rusty hot water. You can lose an entire load of laundry if the water heater fills your washing machine with dirty rusty water. Your dishes won’t get clean if they are washed in dirty water, and your drinking water can be contaminated by the sediment left in the plumbing by a rusty water heater.
If your heater makes strange knocking or grinding noises it usually means the element is covered in burning sediments. In this case you’ll definitely need to have the tank flushed and you may even have to replace the element. Be sure to investigate any strange noises coming from your water heater.
Any one of these conditions can dramatically shorten the life of your water heater. Be sure to have your heater repaired before the problem gets out of control or you may find yourself paying not just for a repair, but for a whole new heater.
